Federal Government Funding Cuts
AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT CUTS FUNDING
The former Coalition government announced $1.2bn for a National Space Mission for Earth Observation (NSMEO), designing, building and operating four new satellites, in March 2022. In May 2022, an election was held bringing a new Australian Political party to power.
In the budget on 9 May 2023, which was the new labour government's first full federal budget and as part of the announcement, the government axed three space projects, but said “the next steps for the NSMEO will be outlined in due course”.
